The environmental importance of the creation of Sea-Nine 211 has been recoconcido with the award Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award in 1996 . The Sea-Nine 211 won this prestigious award in the category of chemical product design less toxic than current alternatives. The active ingredient of Sea-Nine 211, is the 4.5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (DCOI), a member of the family isothiazolin of cleaners.
The DCOI acts to maintain a growing environment inhospitable to marine organisms. When an agency attaches to the helmet (treated with DCOI), the protein in the adhesion to the hull, reacts with the DCOI.
